Mahkatop — Alibaba Cloud announced that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will use the data-driven sustainability solution, Energy Expert, to measure and analyze electricity consumption at the Olympic venues for Paris 2024. This solution aims to provide accurate analysis and better energy consumption planning for future Olympics.

Energy Expert will be used in 35 competition venues during the Paris 2024 Olympics. The IOC will collect energy-related data, such as electricity consumption, backup power capacity, venue capacity, competition information, and weather conditions at the locations, into a single dashboard.

The AI and deep-learning-based solution from Alibaba Cloud aims to provide specific predictions and recommendations for each venue, including optimizing electricity needs to minimize energy waste.

Ilario Corna, Chief Information and Technology Officer of the IOC, said, “With Energy Expert, we can predict future energy impacts and measure the progress of our efforts to minimize energy waste.”

Real-time electricity consumption data in various operational areas will be monitored through 100 smart meters. This data includes electricity usage on the competition fields, broadcast and media areas, technology operation rooms, food and beverage equipment storage areas, and other temporary operational zones.

Data from previous Olympic Games, such as London 2012, PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, and Tokyo 2020, will also be analyzed within the Energy Expert platform.

William Xiong, Vice President of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, said, “The data and insights provided by Energy Expert will help the IOC achieve more sustainable Olympics.”

Energy Expert is also being used outside competition venues to optimize energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions in temporary exhibition areas during Paris 2024. For example, at Alibaba Wonder Avenue, sustainable materials and semi-open space designs are being used to reduce carbon footprints.

Energy Expert was first used at the Olympic Esports Week in Singapore in 2023. Additionally, the solution helps over 3,000 customers worldwide manage carbon emissions from their business activities and products. (*)
