Mahkatop — Noni, also known as Morinda or pace, is a plant commonly found in Indonesia. Scientifically known as Morinda citrifolia, the plant has been empirically utilized by Indonesians not just for its fruit, but also for its leaves and tree bark.
Utilization of Noni Fruit
Dr. Inggrid Tania, Chairperson of the Indonesian Association of Traditional Medicine and Herbal Developers (PDPOTJI), mentioned that noni fruit is often processed into juice. To make noni juice, use one ripe noni fruit, characterized by a soft texture and yellow color, mixed with 250 ml of water. Salt or other fruits with sweet and sour flavors can be added to neutralize the bitterness of noni.
Some people also consume noni by cutting it into pieces and sprinkling it with salt. However, this method is not favored by everyone due to the bitter taste and distinctive aroma of noni.
Utilization of Noni Leaves
Noni leaves are also frequently used by people for topical applications. According to Dr. Inggrid, noni leaves are pounded and then applied to specific skin areas as an antibacterial and acne treatment.
Additionally, noni leaves along with the tree bark can be boiled, and the resulting water can be consumed. This is a traditional method of utilizing noni.
Nutritional Content and Health Benefits of Noni Fruit
Noni fruit is rich in vitamins A, C, and B complex. “Noni is a very beneficial and nutritious fruit. It has a high vitamin C content and is rich in minerals like potassium, which can supplement our daily diet,” explained Dr. Inggrid.
Noni fruit also possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Professor Zullies Ikawati from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Gadjah Mada University explained that the polyphenols in noni act as antioxidants, which are essential for combating daily exposure to oxidants.
Noni for Lowering Bad Cholesterol
In addition to these benefits, noni fruit is also good for people with high cholesterol. The beta-sitosterol content in noni fruit can inhibit fat absorption, which is linked to its cholesterol-lowering effects. Dr. Inggrid added that noni fruit can help lower total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, and increase good cholesterol.
With various methods of utilization and health benefits, noni is a plant that is maximally utilized by the Indonesian people. (*)
