Mahkatop — Shannen Doherty, the renowned actress known for her roles in “Charmed” and “Beverly Hills, 90210”, has passed away at the age of 53. The actress had been battling breast cancer since 2015. The sad news was confirmed by her spokesperson, Leslie Sloane, to TODAY on Saturday, July 13.
“With a heavy heart, I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after years of fighting the disease,” said Leslie Sloane.
Doherty first revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015 and was declared in remission in 2017. However, in 2020, she announced that her cancer had returned and had advanced to stage 4. The cancer had spread to her bones and brain, necessitating various treatments, including brain surgery and the implantation of ports in her chest for chemotherapy.
In a health update in late June on her podcast “Let’s Be Clear,” Doherty shared that she was starting a new treatment protocol after her body had become resistant to the previous treatments. “The protocol stopped working,” Doherty stated during the episode. “Your body adjusts to those medications, becomes immune to them. Your cells change. Your cancer cells adapt—their molecular structure changes, and then you have to undergo a different protocol.”
This new protocol required her to have another port placed in her chest, the same device used during her first round of chemotherapy in 2016. Doherty had attempted chemotherapy via IV for a while, but ultimately all these treatments caused the veins in her left arm to collapse.
In the podcast episode on April 1, Doherty revealed that she anticipated her death soon and had been clearing out some of her storage units to make things easier for her family, especially her mother. Although she had responded well to a new type of treatment she called “cancer infusions” in January and described the results as a “miracle,” the cancer remained unmanageable.
Shannen Doherty’s passing leaves a profound sense of loss among her family, friends, and fans worldwide. The actress, who fought valiantly against cancer, will always be remembered for her fighting spirit and her contributions to the entertainment industry.(*)
