Mahkatop — Salsabyla Ramadhan Putri Harahap, a student from the School of Law (STIH) Graha Kirana, won the “Best Delegate” award at the International Model United Nations (IMUN) Conference 2024.
This prestigious event was organized by the United Nations Women Center for Peace and was attended by participants from four countries: Vietnam, the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. The conference took place in Jakarta over three days, from Tuesday (July 9, 2024) to Thursday (July 11, 2024).
The IMUN Conference serves as a platform for young diplomats to discuss issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are a global and national agreement aimed at achieving a better and more sustainable life for everyone, as well as improving societal welfare.
At the event, Salsabyla joined the UN Women committee and addressed issues of gender equality and women’s leadership. She stated that women’s leadership is still a hotly debated topic. One of the key points she discussed was the importance of a minimum quota of 30 percent of parliamentary seats for women.
“In addition, I also raised the issue of gender equality, which often views women merely as sex slaves for their husbands,” Salsabyla told reporters on Sunday (July 14, 2024).
Salsabyla emphasized that the debate over whether women can hold leadership positions has long been a heated topic in Islamic public discourse. According to her, leadership is a mutual agreement between leaders and followers to achieve justice, security, and integrity in society.
“In this forum, I was interested in discussing gender equality, which remains controversial due to the strong patriarchal culture in society,” said the eldest daughter of Rahmatsyah Ramadhan Harahap SH and Zubaidah Lubis.
Salsabyla revealed that women are still often seen as inferior and only suitable for domestic work. This perspective, she said, hinders women from entering leadership roles and has a negative impact on society.
The STIH Graha Kirana student hopes that with discussions and forums like the IMUN Conference, issues of gender equality and women’s leadership will be better understood and accepted by the wider community. (*)
