Mahkatop — Ustadz Yazid bin Abdul Qadir Jawas, a prominent preacher in Indonesia, passed away on Thursday (July 11, 2024) at his home in Bogor, West Java, after performing the Hajj pilgrimage. He was 61 years old.
The sad news was conveyed by Ustadz Firanda through his personal Instagram account. “The family of Ustadz Firanda Andirja and the UFA OFFICIAL team express our condolences on the passing of our beloved teacher, Ustadzuna Yazid bin Abdul Qadir Jawas,” wrote Ustadz Firanda. He also prayed that Allah would have mercy on him, forgive his sins, and accept his good deeds.
Ustadz Yazid bin Abdul Qadir Jawas was born in Kebumen in 1963 and raised in Bogor. He was known as a preacher, mubaligh, writer, and a Salafi figure in Indonesia. Ustadz Yazid was actively spreading the Sunnah, including fostering the Minhajus Sunnah Islamic Boarding School in Dramaga, Bogor, and delivering lectures and grand sermons in various cities across Indonesia.
His sermons often drew criticism from various quarters, especially those who did not share his views. One of his books, *Mulia dengan Manhaj Salaf* (*Noble with the Salafi Methodology*), was criticized by Habib Rizieq Shihab for allegedly spreading Wahhabism in Indonesia.
Ustadz Yazid was a graduate of the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in Indonesia (LIPIA) and a student of several prominent scholars, including Abdur Razaq bin Abdul Muhsin al-Abbad and Muhammad bin Shalih al-Utsaimin.
In the early 1980s, Ustadz Yazid studied at Ma’had al-‘Ulum al-Islamiyyah wal-’Arabiyyah in Indonesia (LIPIA), which is under the auspices of Imam Muhammad bin Sa’ud Islamic University in Riyadh. He also studied with Prof. Dr. Sheikh Abdurrazzaq, a lecturer at Al-Islamiyah University in Madinah, and attended special classes in Sheikh Muhammad bin Shalih al-Utsaimin’s assembly in Unaizah.
In the early 1990s, Ustadz Yazid developed his dawah activities with Abu Nida, Ja’far Umar Thalib, and Yusuf Usman Baisa by organizing workshops at the Ibnu Qayyim Islamic Boarding School in Sleman, Yogyakarta. In 1992, he and Ja’far Umar Thalib established the As-Sunnah Foundation and built a mosque in Degolan, Kaliurang, Yogyakarta. He also managed the al-Irsyad Islamic Boarding School in Tengaran, Salatiga, Central Java.
His perseverance in spreading the Salafi teachings made the boarding school a significant link in the network of Salafi movement propagation in Indonesia. In 1994, he became the first director of *As-Sunnah* magazine.
In addition to education, Ustadz Yazid also spread his dawah through media, including radio and magazines. Together with Abu Yahya Badrusalam, he established Rodja Radio in 2004 to extend the reach of Salafi dawah across Indonesia. His dawah efforts are also widespread on social media platforms such as YouTube and Instagram.
The late Ustadz Yazid bin Abdul Qadir Jawas will always be remembered as a determined scholar in spreading Salafi teachings in Indonesia. (*)
