Mahkatop — Kidney failure is a serious condition that affects the kidneys’ function, causing significant damage to these vital organs. This condition poses a threat not only to adults but also to children. In addition to medical treatment, kidney failure patients must engage in self-care at home, which includes maintaining a healthy diet and choosing the right foods.
Dr. Elisabet Sipayung, SpPD, an internal medicine specialist, explains that patients with kidney failure should avoid foods high in potassium, such as bananas, oranges, and avocados. “Fruits that are allowed include papaya, but in proportional amounts, meaning not in excess,” she said during a Health Radio broadcast with the Indonesian Ministry of Health on Instagram, Monday (July 22, 2024).
According to the Indonesian Dialysis Patients Community (KPCDI), potassium plays a crucial role in maintaining a regular heartbeat and ensuring muscles work properly. Healthy kidneys can regulate the amount of potassium in the body accurately. However, for patients with kidney failure, it is important to limit foods that can raise blood potassium levels to dangerous levels. High blood potassium levels can lead to weakness, numbness, tingling, irregular heartbeat, and even heart attacks.
“Additionally, small amounts of grapes are allowed, and vegetables like cauliflower are also safe. However, avoid tomatoes and green vegetables that are high in potassium for patients with stage 5 kidney failure or those undergoing dialysis,” added Dr. Elisabet. “High potassium levels cannot be eliminated and continue to circulate in the body, causing arrhythmias or irregular heartbeats in patients,” she explained.
By understanding the foods to avoid and those that can be consumed in limited quantities, kidney failure patients can better manage their condition and prevent serious complications. (*)
