Unhealthy Lifestyles: Three Habits That Can Trigger Kidney Failure in Young Adults

Mahkatop — Kidney failure is increasingly affecting not only the elderly but also young adults. This trend is evident from the rising number of young people undergoing hemodialysis. Dr. Elizabeth Yasmine Wardoyo, a specialist in internal medicine, has identified three common habits among young adults that can unknowingly lead to kidney failure.

Dr. Elizabeth explains that excessive sugar consumption is one of the habits that can trigger kidney failure. “Excessive sugar is often consumed by young people through their coffee habits. While coffee itself does not directly affect the kidneys, the added sugar and condensed milk significantly increase sugar intake,” she explained. Young adults, especially those working from home, often consume coffee multiple times a day, which increases this risk.

The second habit is the frequent use of painkillers. “Painkillers can become a problem because they are toxic to the kidneys if taken excessively. Therefore, it’s crucial to educate the public that painkillers should only be used under a doctor’s supervision,” said Dr. Elizabeth.

Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption is another factor leading to kidney failure. “Excessive alcohol consumption, especially illicit or mixed drinks, can cause severe damage to the kidneys and other organs,” she noted.

Dr. Elizabeth urges young people to take better care of their kidneys by following simple steps such as drinking plenty of water. “To maintain kidney health, drink an adequate amount of water, ideally 30 cc per kg of body weight, for those without liver or heart problems,” she advised.

With increased awareness of the dangers posed by these habits, it is hoped that young adults will take better care of their kidney health and avoid the risk of kidney failure at a young age.(*)
